Afrobeat meets Streetwear
Thursday it is: The long awaited capsule collection by Carhartt WIP in memory of the late great Fela Kuti releases at STAB Berlin! Working closely with the Fela Anikulapo Kuti Estate, Fela Kuti's former manager Rikki Stein and Knitting Factory Records, Carhartt WIP created a capsule collection that remebers the lifetime work of the Nigerian afrobeat pioneeer and human rights activist in proper fashion (no pun intended).
Great Inspiration, great Collaboration
Carhartt WIP x Fela Kuti marks the biggest collab done by Carhartt WIP in the music sector to date. The capsule collection was inspired by Fela Kuti's vibrant album artworks, as well as single tracks like "Ye Ye De Smell" or his "Live in Detroit 1986" show. All this inspiration can be found in t-shirts, bucket hats, shirts and caps, just as Fela Kuti can be found as an inspiration to many artists that preceded him. Missy Elliot, Nas, Pete Rock, Antal, Floating Points and Hunee are just a few out of a gigantic catalogue of artists take took cues from Fela Kuti.
Carhartt WIP x Fela Kuti @ STAB Berlin
It's "save the date" time again. This thursday, 04th of March, 12:00pm CEST the whole Carhartt WIP x Fela Kuti Capsule collection will be available at STAB Berlin, in store and online. That's not enough for you? Don't worry, Carhartt WIP have a little extra up their sleeve. Together with Dazed and NTS Radio, they produced a short movie, that takes London based artist Akinola Davies to Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, toghter with rapper Obongjayar.
